Series:Resilient
Building Resilient Faith #7
Developing the Muscles of Cultural Discernment #3

Cultural Discernment? The ability to compare the beliefs, values, customs and creations of the world we live in with those of the world we belong to (the Kingdom of God) AND once we have made the comparison, to anchor our lives in the theological, moral, and ethical norms of God's kingdom.

Psalm 37:4, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Feelings?
  • Feelings are NOT the problem... the problem is when we allow our feelings to make choices and motivate our actions.
  • Judges 21:25, "At that time there was no king in Israel. People did whatever they felt like doing."
1 Corinthians 1:18-20
  • Verse 25..."For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."
  • All of hell wants us to replace God's truth with a new norm.
2 Ingredients present when we are consumed by culture...

1. We follow our feelings instead of faith.
  • Our emotions, opinions, and desires don't determine truth.
  • Romans 8:6
2. We trusted ourselves more than we trusted God.
  • The real reason we end up culturally bankrupt...we think we know best.
  • Galatians 2:20
  • Matthew 16:21-25
The SOLUTION?
  • Deny yourself and give up what feels like life to you and take up your cross.
  • To follow Jesus and have new life, eternal life, something has to die.
  • Romans 6:6-7
The CRUCIFIED Life...
  • Galatians 2:20 – Too much of you, not enough of him.
  • Galatians 5:24 – Crucified desires.
  • Galatians 6:14 – The cross as a filter
At some point, if you want lasting change, then you will have to stop marching to the drumbeat of the world.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18; Proverbs 3:5-6
