How far can we engage culture without compromising our convictions?
  • We can try to outshout our culture... We can get angry
  • OR... we can stand against the culture with a redemptive mindset.
  • God didn't ask Daniel to distance himself, he asked him to engage.
Daniel 1:3-6
  • Daniel = God is my judge Belteshazzar = Bel's prince
  • God said to Daniel... I have appointed you to be a witness right where you are.
Daniel 1:8-16 – Daniel drew a line in the sand.

  1. Doubts
  2. Pressures
  3. We teach but don't train
5 Principles we need to follow...

1. We must see God.
  • Nothing happened without God's permission
  • If all we see are the defeats, we will be discouraged
  • The promises of God are still in place.
  • 1 Peter 2:9
2. We must distinguish "association with" and "participation in"
  • 1 Corinthians 5:9-11
  • Friendship... YES. Participation... NO
3. We must appreciate the latitude of conscience.
  • Love and truth are NOT in conflict
  • Contrary to popular opinion... love can say no.
4. We must have deep personal convictions.
  • We need an army of Daniels.
5. We must commit to radical obedience.

God had a two-fold purpose for bringing the Jews to Babylon...
    1. To humble them so that they learn how much he hates idolatry.
    2. To be a light to the Babylonians so he could be revealed as a promise keeper.
"Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God." Martin Luther
