The Church in Exile

The Church in Exile: Living Faithfully as Exiles in a Foreign Land #2
Duration:35 mins 35 secs
The Church in Exile: Living Faithfully as Exiles in a Foreign Land

2 Chronicles 36:15-16
  • Sad words – "until there was no remedy."
  • Everything God did to try and get their attention... failed.
  • The results... 2 Chronicles 36:17-21
OT Parallels...
  • God's people had to live as a minority in the midst of a majority pagan culture.
  • God's people had to survive among rampant idolatry that had no regard for God.
The Rebellion of Babylon...
  • The Babylonians sacrificed their children to pagan gods; our culture sacrifices the unborn on the altar of convenience.
  • The Babylonians bowed down to stone idols; we give allegiance to the gods of money, power, and sex.
  • We are exiles, NOT geographically, but morally and spiritually.
  • 1 Peter 2:11-12; John 17:14-16
Jeremiah 2:12-13
  • They refused to turn away from what was destroying them.
  • Jeremiah 2:22; 2:23-24
  • Sin takes us further than we intended to go, keeps us for longer than we intended to stay, and costs us more than we intended to pay.
Jeremiah 6:14-15
  • God called Jeremiah to obedience not to success.
  • God was pleased with Jeremiah, not because he turned the hearts of the people back to God... but because he was Faithful.
Set Apart... Jeremiah was set apart before he was born.
  • God has the same plan for us.
  • The clearer we hear our call from God, the more courage we will have to face uphill spiritual battles.
  • The God who calls is the God who provides
God's invitation to Judah is an invitation to us. Jeremiah 3:12-14

Augustine... "Whatever men build, men will destroy. Let's get on with building the Kingdom of God."
  • Matthew 16:18, "on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
  • What seems impossible with men is possible with God.
