Why Christmas

Why some do and don't celebrate Christmas.

Questions & Answers... (why some don't celebrate?)

1. We don't actually know the exact date when Jesus was born.
  • There are a few details that would lead us to believe it was NOT in the winter.
    • The shepherds were in the fields.
    • Censuses were typically NOT taken in the winter.
2. God never told us in Scripture to celebrate Christ's birth.
  • The first official mention of December 25th as a holiday honoring Jesus' birthday appears in an early Roman Calendar from 336 A.D.
What Caused the Change?
  • The most common theory about the origins of the Christmas date is that it was borrowed from pagan celebrations.
  • Rather than worshiping the Sun, Constantine wanted people to worship the SON.
Why would we even think about Celebrating?
  • There comes a point where the roots are so far gone that the present meaning doesn't carry the pagan connotation anymore.
  • The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus are the most important event in human history.
3 Reasons we SHOULD take advantage of Christmas...
 
1. Our goal is to turn the eyes of all men to Jesus.
  • While we do not know the exact date, we do know...the light of the world has come.
  • How many times did Jesus use events that were going on around him to reveal more of himself to people.
  • John 7:37-41 – LIVING Water.
2. Our goal is to win some.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:19-23; Acts 17:22-23
3. Our goal is to turn our own hearts toward Jesus.
  • All of us need reminders.
Wait... aren't all days special? If all days are special, then it probably means that there are NO special days.
