Galatians: Jesus + Nothing #4
Duration:35 mins 5 secs
Galatians: Jesus + Nothing #4

Galatians 2:11-21
  • It is LESS surprising that Peter stopped eating food with Gentiles than the fact that he started eating with them in the first place.
  • Acts 10:34-35; 11:2
  • Peter, when it came to the Gentiles, stopped acting in accord with his convictions.
  • Peter was afraid of criticism from those of the circumcision party.
  • Paul does NOT see Peter actions as rude, unmannered or unwelcoming.
  • Peter is NOT acting in line with the truth of the gospel.
Here is what that means...
  1. The Gospel is a truth. It is a message, a set of claims.
  2. The Gospel has a vast number of applications for ALL of life.
Peter's sin was (to sum up in one word) Nationalism.
  • Actions speak louder than words.
  • Nationalism I just one form of legalism.
  • Legalism always results in pride and fear not to mention exclusion and strife.
Paul responds...
  • God did not have fellowship with you on the basis of race and culture...though you were good and devout...that had nothing to do with it.
  • can you have fellowship on the basis of race and culture?
  • Paul doesn't simply say racism is a sin (which it is). He uses the gospel to show Peter the roots of the mistake he is making.
Consistently Christian?
  • To be consistently Christian we must learn the gospel is for all, it is enjoyed by faith, Christ is the savior, and the Spirit guides.
  • Who is God's true Israel? Who are the true people of God?
  • God's true Israel consists of ONE person...the Messiah.
  • New question: Who belongs to the Messiah? How is that identity expressed?
Paul's answer... those who belong to the Messiah are IN the Messiah, so that what is true of him is true of them.
  • All who are in the Messiah are the true people of God.
Who are We? We are the Messiah's people, with His life now at work in us.
  • AND, since the central thing about him is his loving faithfulness, the central thing about us...the thing that defines our own loving faithfulness.
Paul was demonstrating to Peter that even Jewish Christians have lost their old identity...and have come int a new one defined by the Messiah.
