Wastefully Extravagant

Wastefully Extravagant #4

Wastefully Extravagant #4

Question: What do we need to escape the shackles of our particular brand of lostness?
  • His Initiating Love.
  • It is NOT the repentance that causes the Father's love, but rather the reverse!
Come to the Feast...
  • Jesus is not a pharisee about pharisees; he is not self-righteous about the self-righteous.
  • Our repentance must go deeper than just regret for individual sins.
How does a person who is lost, yet has very few sins, get saved?
  • Pharisaical repentance doesn't go deep enough to get at the real problem...pride.
What must we do then to be saved?
  • We must learn how to repent of the sin under all our other sins...the sin of seeking to be our own savior and Lord.
  • We must admit that we've put our hope and trust in things other than God.
Heart of the Message?
  • By the time we get to the 3rd story, and we hear about the lost son, we are fully prepared to expect someone will go and to search for him...but no one does!
  • Who should have gone out and searched for the lost son?
  • The Elder Brother
Over Simplification?
  • The forgiveness is free and unconditional to the perpetrator; but it is costly to you.
  • If the wrongdoer has to something to merit it, then it isn't mercy. Forgiveness always comes at a cost to the one granting forgiveness.
Flawed Older Brother...
  • By putting a flawed older brother in the story, Jesus is inviting us to yearn for true one.
  • Our true older brother paid our debt, on the cross, in our place.
A Changed Heart?
  • If our hearts are going to change we need to be moved by the sight of what it cost to bring us home!!!
The Choice...
  • The choice seems to be turn from God and pursue our desires OR repress desire and do our moral duty.
  • Jesus on the cross, gives us a better option.
  • We will never stop being younger brothers or older brothers until we acknowledge our need, rest by faith, and gaze in wonder at the work of our true elder brother, Jesus Christ.
