Wastefully Extravagant #2

2 Ways to find Happiness & Fulfillment...
  1. The way of Moral Conformity
  2. The way of Self-Discovery
Moral Conformity...
  • The Pharisee believed they could only maintain their place in his blessing and receive salvation through strict obedience to the Bible.
  • In that view, you only attain happiness and a world made right by achieving moral correctness.
  • This way of thinking holds that individuals must be free to pursue their own goals regardless of custom and convention.
  • The world would be a far better place, according to this view, if tradition, prejudice, authority and other barriers to personal freedom were removed.
The Message of Jesus parable is that both of these approaches are wrong!

The Heart of the Brothers...Both sons resented their father's authority and ought ways of getting out from under it.
  • Each Son by being very bad the other by being extremely good.
  • Neither son loved the father for himself...they both were using the father for their own self-centered ends.
A Deeper Concept of Sin...Most people think of sin as failing to keep God's rules and conduct, but while not less than that, Jesus definition of sin goes beyond that.
  • You can also avoid Jesus as savior by keeping all the moral laws and thinking that because you do you have rights.
  • If you believe that God out to bless you and help you because you have worked hard to obey him, then Jesus may be your helper, your example...but he is not your savior.
Elder Brothers...obey God to get things...they don't obey to get God himself.
  • Sin is NOT just breaking the rules, it is putting yourself in the place of God as Savior, Lord and judge.
The distinct from these two approaches!
  • In the gospel everyone is wrong, everyone is loved, and everyone is called to recognize and change.
  • Jesus says in Luke 18:14...the humble are IN and the proud are OUT.
Great Irony...
  • The younger son's flight from the father was obvious.
  • The older son stayed home but was actually more distant and alienated from the father than his brother, because he was blind to his true condition.
