Praise: Seven Words that Could Change the Way you Worship

Martin Lloyd Jones argued that "a dislike of enthusiasm can be one of the greatest hinderances to revival."

Love in Greek???
  • Storge = Family Love
  • Philia = Brotherly Love
  • Eros = Romantic Love
  • Agape = God's Love
Richard Foster said, "The Psalms are the literature of worship and their most prominent feature is praise. Praise the Lord is the shout that reverberates from one end of the Psalter to the other. Singing, shouting, dancing, rejoicing, adoring – all are the language of praise."

  • To revere or worship with extended hands. To hold out the hands. To throw a stone or arrow.
  • While the word itself is translated as "praise", some scholars have added the idea of extended hands because of the context in which the word is found.
My Agenda...
  1. To help us understand more and more the necessity of praising God with all of heart, soul, mind, and strength.
  2. To say that praising God carries many different expressions, some you may not like, but ALL of which can be pleasing to God.
People "Yadah'd" the Lord because of...
  • His goodness His loyalty
  • His righteousness His relenting form anger
  • His wonders His nearness to his people.
  • His help.
Yadah is found 111 time in Scripture!
  • Jeremiah 50:14 it is used to describe the act of shooting an arrow.
  • Lamentations 3:53, it is used to describe throwing a stone.
  • Yadah also describes those moments when the Hebrew people overcome by the glory of the Lord that their hands shot upward in response.
  • Psalm 145:10; Psalm 67:3; Psalm 44:8
Yadah is NOT constrained to a particular time in history.
  • Leah and Jacob in Genesis
  • 2 Chronicles 20:21
2 Chronicles 20:22-23
  • Notice it is when they begin to sing and Yadah that the Lord moved.
  • I wonder if there are some victories in our lives that will only come after we begin to sing and Yadah the Lord?
More Scripture...
  • Psalm 88:9; Psalm 134:2; Psalm 141:2; Psalm 143:6; Lamentations 3:41; 1 Kings 8:22-23
