Raised in Christ

Raised in Christ #3
Raised in Christ #3

3 John 4..."I have no greater joy than to hear my children are walking in the truth."
  • The reality: The FLIP SIDE is true as well...We have no greater sorrow than to hear that our children are NOT walking in truth.
Proverbs 22:6..."Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it."
  • This may be the most likely course...but it is no guarantee.
  • Bottom line: Many parents of adult children have great pain associated with their prodigal children.
  • These children know the truth but they choose a lie.
Luke 15:11-32
  • In the Eastern context it is completely disgraceful for a son to ask his father for his inheritance prior to death.
  • It is a slap in the face for the son to take the inheritance his father worked to build and leave home with it instead of remaining in the community of family.
Father's Perspective...The father in this story represents our father...God.
  • In His Sovereignty God has given us free will.
  • Free will means our kids may choose another way of living as adults apart from Christ, despite our best efforts.
Consequences...
  • Parents who continually erase the consequences interrupt God's process of discipline causing their kids to ignore the need for repentance.
  • Suggestion: Allow your children to face the consequences of their chosen lifestyle...all the while praying your guts out for their return.
He Came to Himself...
  • If we teach our children anything when they are young we must teach and model a repentant heart.
  • The only hope for a destructive free will is a heart that repents.
Celebrate...God is a Father who longs for our return.
  • Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23-24
4 Practical Steps...
  1. Offer your heart to the Lord.
  2. Turn your heart to your child.
  3. Draw your child's heart to yours.
  4. Point your child's heart to Christ.
Balance...
  • If you recognize that your own sinful patterns have impressed your children in a negative way...repent and seek God's forgiveness and your child's.
  • At the same time understand hat it is not necessarily your fault that your adult child becomes a prodigal.
  • Remember that you are not the only one eagerly awaiting your child's return.
Intentional Biblical Parenting is NOT for sissies.
  • We face a very real enemy.
  • What we need most is courage.
