Set Free: A Study of the Book of Galatians

Overview of Galatians 3...
  1. Acceptance by God solely on the basis of faith is as old as Abraham.
  2. The Law does NOT justify because that was not why it was's function was to curse.
  3. The Law operates NOT as a system governed by faith but a system of governed by doing.
  4. The curse of the Law fell on Christ so others might escape.
Walking Away?
  • The Gentiles weren't walking away from Jesus...they were walking away from these legalistic rules that were undermining the good news of the gospel.
  • Are people TODAY walking away from Jesus...or are they walking away from the church that looks very little like the Jesus they preach?
  • Galatians 5:12
The Gospel is for ALL – What kind of people make you uncomfortable when they start worshiping with us?
  • If the only way we can have unity is to be cookie cutter Christians who are exactly alike...that is a problem because we are not exactly alike.
  • We do not really need the Spirit if we are identical. But we do need the Spirit to enable various people to live together in unity. Ephesians 4:1-6
Demands? There are NO conditions for acceptance with God apart from obedient surrender to Christ and life in the Spirit. Matthew 23:5

Galatians 3:1-3
  • We cannot be made right with God on our own...only Jesus can do that.
  • The gospel is NOT something we can take pride in because it is NOT something we earned. Galatians 3:5-7, 9
What is Paul doing? He is reminding them that the Spirit was not given to them on account of their observance of the Law...but on account of their faith in Jesus.
  • Gal. 3:13-14
  • The gospel doesn't undermine the covenant of God with Abraham, instead, Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise. Galatians 3:15-16
Galatians 3:21-22 – What matters to Paul is that someone is IN the Messiah.
  • This is NOT simply a spiritual state resulting from some inner experience.
  • It is a matter of belonging to a particular community.
Galatians 3:23-27 – Clothed with Christ
  1. Our Primary Identity is in Christ.
  2. The closeness of our relationship to Christ.
  3. The Imitation of Christ.
  4. Our Acceptability to God.

The ground is even at the foot of the Cross.
